Penedes & Cava

Dating back to the 7th century BC, the first vines to grow in this north-eastern corner of Spain were planted in the region of Penedès. Less than an hour's drive from the modern day metropolis of Barcelona, a tour through Penedès will have you passing through nature preserves, beautiful small villages, and a plethora of bodegas all within view of the enigmatic peaks of Montserrat.

 

Widely recognized as the birthplace of Cava, the wine region of Penedès lays claim to several other noteworthy distinctions including the oldest vineyards and largest production. Additionally, Cava and Penedès are both protected under the Spanish Designation of Origin (DO), which certifies that products adhere to certain standards of quality and methods of production. Cava is made in the “traditional method” adopted from Champagne.

 

This tour is meant to show you what the traditional Cava is all about, avoiding the cheap fizz of the big commercial producers. We’ll taste organic certified cavas as well as innovative and surprising reds, whites, and rosés in small wineries run by enthusiastic young winemakers.
